Started in 2020, it currently features all-Black improv ensembles and troupes from DC and Baltimore.
The Cookout was created and is curated by WIT improvisers Jamal Newman (who founded WIT’s first-ever all-Black ensemble Lena Dunham) and Krystal Ali, who performs with Lena Dunham, as well as company ensembles Hellcat and LIZARD GIRL. Both Jamal and Krystal also perform with Kinfolk — the first-ever all-Black team to win the Fighting Improv Smackdown Tournament in 2024. The Cookout is consistently one of WIT’s most frequently sold-out shows, so be sure to get your tickets before they’re gone!
WIT shows are perfect for a date night, an evening downtown with guests, or a fun experience on your own! Plus, we’re located along the bustling 14th St. NW corridor, which offers plenty of choices for places to grab a drink or a bite to eat before or after the show!
For more than 25 years, Washington Improv Theater’s improv comedians have taken a simple suggestion or story from a volunteer audience member and turned it into a never-before-seen comedy show.
WIT’s performers are so talented that most first-time audience members find it impossible to believe that everything is totally made up on-the-spot! (Trust us, it is!) No two shows are ever the same so you can keep coming back for more…
WIT’s alumni have gone on to SNL, The Daily Show, HBO’s Insecure, and The White Lotus to name just a few comedy destinations.
